I've started work on my entry for the DPP on Your Wardrobe Unlock'd/Foundations Revealed. Yesterday I enlarged this pattern from the Foundations Revealed website. (The pattern can also be found here on the Bridges on the Body Blog.) Originally, I wanted to try out [livejournal.com profile] jenthompson's teens corset pattern (also on Foundations Revealed), but this other pattern was much closer to my measurements and involved less alterations. So I enlarged this pattern using my trusty system of putting a grid on the small pattern and copying it by hand to a larger grid. I then shaved off about 1/8 of an inch from several of the seams to make it the right size for me. Today I cut out the mock-up and sewed the seams together. It is a super easy pattern to work with. There aren't tons of pieces, and none of them are oddly shaped. Plus, the vertical seams make for easy fitting adjustments. Also, the markings on the pattern are very accurate. Tomorrow I am going to put the bones in the mock-up and see how it fits. Exciting!

The blouse is mostly together now. I worked on it the other day. All that needs doing for it is to finish the side seams, hem the sleeves, and hem the bottom. I tried it on and it looks nice, but I don't really like how it feels on. I think I cut the neck too wide. It makes for a flattering neckline, but it feels a bit too open for the fall. This one may end up being on hold for a little while.

Toward the end of summer, I made two pairs of shorts using a modified version of the Wearing History Smooth Sailing pattern. I'm so happy with them! Modifications include lowering the waist, removing the front pleat, adding DEEP pockets, and making them close in front. Here's a whole bunch of pictures as proof of productivity.

Shorts! )

And on me, to show how great they fit. I think that these ones really have a cute, retro pin-up vibe.

In other sewing news, now that it's September the Fall sewing line-up is being planned. On my list for modern wear is the ivory satin blouse and plum wool jacket. Plum wool, chocolate bember lining, and fake leather wrapped buttons shown.

For historical stuff, I want to get cracking on the 1840 stuff like [livejournal.com profile] jennil. This means completing the flounced petticoat. However, I'm thinking that I don't want to have to deal with all the flounces and it may end up being a corded petticoat instead. (Unfortunately, all the flounces are already cut out. They may end up becoming the back of a bustle petticoat in the future.) A plain petticoat will also be needed to complete the undergarments. I also have some plans for the DPP on Your Wardrobe Unlock'd/Foundations Revealed that I'll get into some other time.

With all these plans and being in school as well and my need to get a job, I am going to be busy, busy, busy!

Grrr...

Having sewn the wrong sides together about three times, I decided it was time for a break. Currently working on my ivory satin blouse. I came up with a design inspired by the early 30's. It has a V shaped front with a collar, as well as capped sleeves cut in one with the bodice. I decided that I didn't want a shiny blouse, so I've been trying to sew it with the wrong side out. However, force of habit keeps putting shiny sides together when sewing because that's technically the "right" side. I just sewed the two shoulder seams the wrong way, decided I didn't feel up to ripping out the seams (I'd already ripped out one shoulder seam, and a good chunk of collar seam) AGAIN, and ran away. :p

Sparkly!

I went to the local antiques store with my dad yesterday. He was looking for records. I was on the search for sewing/costume-related things. I did see a fashion plate from 1837 which was pretty cool, but was out of my price range. (Now that school is starting up, I really need to get a job or cut back even more on spending. Textbooks are pricy!) Instead I got a new brooch. The lady working there dated it to the 1940s-1950s. It's two little birds on a twig. So cute! And it's covered in marcasite, which was something I'd been wanting. Second choice was a maracasite Art Deco bar pin, but I already have a bar pin, so I decided against it. Unfortunately, no pictures. My camera is still being difficult.

In sewing news, today I am going to get together a pattern to make a blouse out of what's leftover of the ivory satin. I want to use the wrong side, so it's not so shiny. Should be a good addition to the autumn wardrobe. And our weather has been so dark and rainy lately that it's a good time to be thinking about autumn clothes.
