Things I made in 2014 (some still need a bit of finishing, but are mostly done), with comments:
1. Smooth Sailing grey wool trousers: need hemming, nice wardrobe staple, will be good for when I have to look professional or something like a grown-up ;p

2. 1790s plum silk stays: technically need tape over the seams, but wearable as is, SO GLAD to finally have these done!

3. 1790s cotton-linen shift: practical and useful
More behind the cut! )
I did a terrible job on my 2014 goals, but don't care at all. I ended up wanting to sew different things. It happens. :p

On average I managed to sew one thing per month. Not bad for me. I also tried out a lot of new techniques and made a wide variety of garments. 2015 will mostly be CoCo sewing: lots of 1880s stuff and possibly a couple of other eras thrown in, plus many more accessories! :)

The Challenge:
HSF #2 Innovation

Fabric: Grey wool with a tiny woven plaid/check/cross-barred

Pattern: Wearing History Smooth Sailing Trousers (with minor alterations)

Year: c. 1940

Notions: zipper, button, thread

How historically accurate is it? Fairly accurate aside from the modern zipper, button, overlocking, and machine buttonhole.

Hours to complete: Not sure, a few hours here and there over the past week and a half.

First worn: Yet to be done.

Total cost: Approximately $20? I can't remember because I bought the fabric so long ago. Not counting the pattern because I've used it for other things.

(True confessions time. These have yet to be hemmed. But I want to do that by hand and I don't have the time at the moment to get it done, nor do I have any sort of occasion to wear them in the immediate future. I will have the time to finish them soon, though. So a bit of a cheat. But you'd never know if I didn't tell you. Also pictures seem to reveal a discrepancy in length so that will also need to be remedied. Darn. ;p)

In an effort to succeed at HSF #2, I started my pants the other day. My Smooth Sailing Trousers are now cut out and have the darts all sewn. I have also sewn in some slash pockets (my own addition). I am using a gray wool that has a small sort of rectangular check pattern woven in. It's nice and smooth and has a lovely drape. I really like the top-stitched pleat on this pattern. While the original pattern has the knife pleat facing the CF, I thought that the excess fabric, when combined with my pockets, would be too bulky so I have the pleat facing the sides. However, the pockets are still wide enough that the fabric all overlaps anyways, so I totally could have kept the pleats facing the other way. Silly! Oh well, it still looks good and should be fine in terms of bulkiness. Up next is finishing edges and putting together the seams. Then I'll get to try them on for fit. It should be alright, since I've used this pattern before for shorts, but every fabric acts differently and this wool has a tiny bit of stretch, so who knows? Hopefully, I can keep getting little bits done every day or two.
