It has something to do with writing an essay on Greek athletics, but I feel like posting again. Twice in two days: shocking, I know. But it's sewing related, so it's all good. I've been thinking a lot lately about doing things, instead of just thinking and talking about how much fun it'd be to do things. And this leads me to wanting to get things done. And I have a bunch of fabric in my room earmarked for 18th century projects. However, I am not happy with the fit of my stays which it took me forever to complete. (Plus, they're an earlier style than I like.) This results in a lack of motivation to make pretty clothes because who wants to put all that time and effort into making pretty clothes to go over a bad foundation?
Solution: Make new stays. Preferably ones that fit. There's a pattern in the Jill Salen book that I've been wanting to try, especially after seeing
green_martha make up a pair of stays from this book, and it's a pretty close match to my measurements too. :) I believe it's the first pair of 1790 half-boned stays made up in brown jean. Plus, after making the not great fitting stays and having made a pair or two of decent fitting stays (one Tudor-ish for me and one 18th c. for a friend), I feel like I may actually sorta know what I'm doing for this. So, my next project for myself, after the aforementioned super-easy skirt, is a new pair of stays. And an extra bonus is that I have almost all the fabric (canvas, twill, and plummy dupioni). I just need something for a lining and binding and since those are the last two steps I'm not too worried about them at the moment. My mom wants to make herself a dress so we're planning a trip to a couple local fabric stores this weekend. That means I can get my elastic (for the skirt) and something for a mock-up for the stays.
Also on the sewing list is a dress for a friend. This is my Christmas holidays project. Well, one of them. But the only one that pays. And she volunteered to help me cut the fabric. So that should also be a good time. She wants me to recreate this dress for her.
