Well, my mom was nice enough to take me to the Costume Museum of Canada today. I've been once before and something rather surprised me: they aren't very careful/conscientious people. They allow photos, and they don't make any sort of conditions about using flash. I turned off my flash, of course, anyways. Photos from this trip will be forthcoming. The exhibit was called I Do, and was all wedding dresses from the 1840s to the 1980s. Well, there was one dress from pre-1860. Mostly it ranged from 1870-1950. We wanted to see an exhibit from the Bata Shoe Museum about heels, but it ended on Sunday, so we missed that. Oh well. The exhibit was nice, some lovely early 1900s gowns, but...
Here comes the rant. As we were finishing up looking at everything a group of 4 people came in. Two of them were mentally handicapped and were touching the garments. The people with them were in pretty much no way watching them to make sure this didn't happen. In fact, and I nearly freaked out in the museum, the people who were with them, and I can only assume were supposed to be *taking care* of the handicapped people, were touching the garments. This idiot Draped The Train Of A 1920s Wedding Dress On Herself!!! To Get A Picture Taken!!! And there are signs everywhere saying don't touch the garments. HOLY CRAP! I wanted to smack her! So I reported them to the nice lady at the cashier/counter.
It was just unbelievable. Like, the museum people are nice enough to not keep everything under glass, so you can go right up to things and look really closely, and these people are totally abusing that. If you were in a different museum, would you smash the glass so you can touch the stuff if it looks shiny? No. I mean this person was twirling around a 1960s coat that was on a mannequin. These are nice things. These are things that you can't get any more. These are things that start decomposing once they come off the loom! And this imbecile thinks it's alright to just touch them and play with them! I mean, it's not like the garments were all in perfect condition and looking brand new. You could actually see some of them falling apart and the shattered fabric. And these are wedding dresses, so they're all made of gorgeous light silks and fine, fine cottons and laces. And She Was Touching Them! Unbe-fricken-lievable! Anybody wanna join me in tracking them down and hitting them with large, heavy, blunt objects?
