It still needs a hem and hooks/eyes. And I need to unpick some of the stitching attaching the skirt to the waistband and redo it because I didn't overlap properly for the opening in the skirt, so it gapes a bit. Annoying, but shouldn't take too long. One of my classes has videos of storytelling to listen to instead of books to read, and one of the benefits of that is that I can get handsewing or knitting done during those hours. It's great! Anyways, here's the bodice (which is a bit too long in the back, something I need to fix on my future Victorian stuff) with skirt attached. I knife pleated the front/sides and cartridge pleated the back of the skirt and then whipped the skirt to the waistband (as per the advice I got on The Sewing Academy).

Thanks! I like to think of it as my other Little House dress. :)

Other than the extra length in the bodice back, it's perfect! I love the line of the late 1860's. Are you going to make a white collar and cuffs to go with it? They always make such a nice finishing touch.

I hadn't realized your hair was quite so long. It's very pretty.

Thank you! This was sort of my trial run of this pattern, so I don't mind having a couple small problems that I can fix in future iterations. I really like the lines of the late 1860s too, more restrained and tailored. I do plan on making a collar and cuffs to finish it off (as well as a bonnet eventually). I think they make it look more "right."

Thanks! I'm growing it out for now just to see how long it can get. I've never had it this long before.

Yeah, your hair IS long, woman! We should do some kind of Victorian long hair thing at coco. And do one of those photos like you see.

Thank you! And yup! I want to wear it to Pepin because it's 1867 and it's the 150th anniversary of Laura's birthday! :)

So pretty! I love the print of the fabric- gives it a very autumnal feeling.

Thanks! It's funny because I bought this fabric online and thought it was very spring-y looking, but when I got it the green was much more olive in person. It was actually kind of lucky because autumn colours are way more me. :)

It's gorgeous. I know I know little about the authenticity etc, but I adore those sleeves! It always seems sensible to me to have the sleeves a bit forward from the elbows. How often do we reach straight back behind us?

Love the fabric too!

The back looks like it just needs to be pulled down a bit. Or maybe it's a bit too tight under the arms/across the back there? Doesn't look hard to fix, or hard to correct in the draft for the next dress.

Thank you! Yeah, a curved sleeve totally makes sense because your elbow is at least slightly bent most of the time anyways. The back really is just a touch too long. It's not something that shows up nearly as much in bodice mock-ups because it gets pushed up a bit from the petticoats/skirts/bumpads etc. that sit at the natural waist. It'll be very easy to fix. :)

Are you planning to fix it on this dress? or wait till you do the next one?

Date: 2016-10-05 03:19 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mala-14.livejournal.com
Nope, not on this one. It would involve undoing and redoing way too much hand stitching. But on the next one for sure.
