I just need to close up the bottom hoop casing and fix a tiny bit somewhere else where I ripped out a couple stitches and this hoop will be done! A couple of quick photos taken today. Before and after adding the steels:

I'm going to take real pictures tomorrow along with some of my finished corset. I also plan on doing a full write-up/tutorial of how I made my hoop in case anyone is interested in making one like this. It was really easy and I think it gives a good late-1860s shape, kind of like this one from the MFA:

That's a cool shape! Did you use a pattern, or draft it yourself?

Thanks! Drafted it myself, but based off a pattern in Grimble's Reconstruction Era Fashions and the hoop and bustle in Corsets and Crinolines.

Definitely a good late '60's shape. I'm glad you're doing late '60's too. I love the dresses from this period.

Thank you! Civil War stuff seems to overshadow the later part of the decade. I often enjoy more over-the-top historical styles, but the rather more restrained, tailored look of this era is probably more in line with my actual everyday tastes.

Early 1860's is certainly much more popular than late 1860's just as 1770's and 1780's are much more popular than the rest of the eighteenth century. I guess it's because people can find good excuses to wear the things (at least in America). It sounds like there's a reasonably sized population in England who get into 1660's so they can reenact their civil war, and there's the very beginning of the 17th century for late Elizabethan stuff, but the rest of the 17th century is not well-represented. Here's to venturing into the neglected periods and making our own excuses to wear things!

You're right. Geography totally plays a part. Conveniently, our local history is having all kinds of anniversaries that are some interesting periods. Next year is the 150th anniversary of Confederation (1867), 2020 will be the 150th anniversary of Manitoba joining Confederation (1870), and this past year was the 100th anniversary of women getting the vote in Manitoba (1916). But I have absolutely no occasion for pre-Regency Western/European style dress here. Of course, that's not going to stop me from delving into 18th century next year!

It shouldn't stop you! There can always be some excuse, however tenuous it may be.
