Blouse pattern

I finally gave myself a kick in the butt and patterned the body of my 1895 blouse. It's based off of my standard 1880s bodice pattern, but changed into 2 pieces (front and back) with 3 tucks in the front and straight fronted. I didn't pattern the sleeve because my piece of newspaper wasn't big enough. It'll just be one giant piece anyways because it'll be a very full bishop sleeve. I also left off patterning the collar and collar stand and cuffs because I won't be doing those until later. One thing at a time, right? Tomorrow will be cutting out the main pieces (front, back, and sleeve) in ivory voile.

How do you pattern them? Like did you do a drafting course? Or just self-taugtht?

Self-taught. But the pattern originally came from a book that uses special rulers to enlarge the small patterns in the book to your size. Then I make adjustments for whatever I need.

Oh right, interesting. I've seen those patterns around but never tried one. I gather there's a number of different systems that make patterns in that way.

Yeah, there were a lot of different systems historically, ranging from like the 1870s to the 1950s I think. Some have different rulers for length and width, some use the same one for width. I'll go check that out. I've heard mixed results about the actual pattern they create, from vintage sewing communities. Nice to know some of them definitely work well!
