I've noticed that I don't have the greatest range of motion in my historical dresses. I can't seem to lift my arm past the shoulder. I'm pretty sure that I've read somewhere that making the armscye smaller or tighter under the arm helps increase range. I do have a bit of space in the underarm on my late Victorian bodice pattern that I could take in. What do you guys have to say on the subject of arm movement? Thanks!

High, tight armscyes are definitely the way to go. It really does improve range of motion. It's not so much taking in as raising it. You want the armscye to be very close up under your arm.

Yup, this. You really want it to conform to your arm/underarm.

High, small armscye for sure; as wide and flat a sleeve cap as your style/era allows; more width in the back of the cap for forward reaching room.

Threads magazine has had some great articles on this if you can track them down. It's a shame they don't publish more content online.

Have you read this article? It covers the basics. http://www.ikatbag.com/2014/03/subtelties-in-drafting-sleeves.html
