I am not sure what I want to do with the boning in this corset and it's holding up cutting (seam allowances may change depending on what I decide) and ordering (number of bones). What do you think?

Individual, separate bones throughout, like these:

Or, grouped bones, like these:

Both are accurate for the 1880s. The first would be less expensive because it'll use fewer bones, but I'm intrigued by the grouped ones because they also look cool and I don't see a lot of recreations with the boning done in groups.

I like the individual bones!

They would be my choice for sure if I was doing contrast boning casings.

And I like the grouped ones, because to me they're more interesting and more curvy-looking than the regular verticals. :p That said, it looks like the single bones are on gored corsets, whereas the grouped ones are better for gussetted corsets.

Having looked at a number of these corsets on museum websites (zooming in A LOT), most of the ones with grouped bones are actually gored corsets. It's the way the wide boning casings are applied on top that make it look like there are bust gussets since you can't see the seamlines. I think I may go with the grouped ones. :)

I've never seen the grouped ones before. I was gonna vote for that until I saw [livejournal.com profile] nuranar's input. If it is a gusset vs gored thing I would do what my corset is. ;)

I think I'm going to do the grouped ones. My corset is gored, but most of the ones with the grouped bones are gored. The boning is put in casings that are applied on top of the seamlines, making it look like there are gussets at the bust. It's really interesting... which is why I want to try it! :)

I also have to agree with nuranar. The grouped bones have the look of flowing around the gussets.

I think that's my choice too. :)
