Trip Recap: London (Again)
May. 21st, 2014 02:25 pmThe last leg of our trip was London. We arrived in the afternoon and after checking in at the hotel we went for afternoon tea at The Royal Horseguards. We had their signature strawberries and cream black tea. It was seriously delicious.

After a leisurely 2 hour tea we went to see a West End show: Jersey Boys! It is my new favourite musical. Conveniently, the movie is coming out next month. Guess who's going to be seeing that wearing her new Jersey Boys official t-shirt!

The next day we did lots of classic tourist-y things. We were staying on Baker Street so of course we had to check out 221B. The line was ridiculously long, so we didn't go in.

We had a look at Westminster Abbey (which was closed that day, boo!) and Parliament and the big clocktower that houses Big Ben. We also had a nice walk through the National Portrait Gallery. (I wanted to see the portraits because I had seen the National Gallery last time I was in London.) I LOVED seeing the Tudor and Elizabethan portraits. Also saw the one of Jane Austen painted by her sister, Cassandra. It was SO tiny! We went shopping on Oxford Street (at Selfridge's! Very fabulous.) and eventually made our way to the British Museum. We were only there for about 1 1/2 hours, but we actually saw a fair bit of the museum. Unfortunately my camera battery was close to dead this day so I didn't get many pictures.

I was very careful to make sure it was good and charged for the next day. Because that was the day for the Victoria and Albert Museum! The day began with a ride on the Underground to Shepherd's Bush Market. We walked through that enjoying the nice weather and arrived at Goldhawk Road for FABRIC SHOPPING! I didn't take any pictures of that because I was too enamored with the fabrics. More on all the fabrics later. Fabric is so important it gets its own post. ;) I did take a picture of the pies and mash that we had at A. Cooke's Pie and Mash. Very tasty! Sadly, lots of the small businesses like this on Goldhawk Road are being bought out and forced to move because of large business developments. Not cool!

All the costumes at the Victoria and Albert will also get their own post. Way to many to fit in here. But we saw lots of other wondrous things at the museum, like the Great Bed of Ware.

And the building itself was just gorgeous.

The bit on Aesthetic dress reminded me of Aubry

It was pouring rain by the time we got out of the museum, but when we got out of the Underground station to go see Buckingham Palace, it was super sunny. We needed a bit of a pick-me-up so we stopped at a lovely little cafe and had bread and butter pudding and hot beverages. The cafe was obviously an old pharmacy; there were counters filled with little drawers and one section of the cafe was labelled "Dispensary." The pudding was superb! I did some research after getting home and have deduced that it must have been made with croissants.

Ending on a touristy note, we saw Buckingham Palace.

The rest of the day was spent doing a bit more shopping, checking out Bond and Oxford Streets some more. (Sadly missed going to Liberty on Regent.) I needed to finish getting gifts for people at home.
The next day was quite a mess. The airline had rescheduled our return flight to a day before we even left on our trip so we arrived at the airport to find that we didn't have a flight. We got a new flight (luckily, and no extra charge) but it involved two layovers instead of one. And Every Single One of our flights was delayed by about an hour. And it was something of a rush to get through customs, get our baggage, and check our baggage, all in an hour and a half. We finally made it home after 1:00am. Whew. I was glad to get home and see my family again. That was the best!
