Fabric shopping
Jan. 16th, 2011 04:10 pmThere was a big 50% off sale at our local fabric store. So my mom and I headed over there. I ended up getting 9.5m of white cotton broadcloth for $5.50/m. But something weird happened there. I asked the cutter if she could make sure that it was on grain, because the last time I bought some plain cotton, it was totally off grain making it fairly useless for my purpose. She asked me if I tore it. I said yes. She said that they never tear it and that I should cut it. Um... I don't think she got the point. (As in, the fabric itself would still not be on grain. And trying to do tucks or cording channels in it or making a bunch of flounces out of it just would not work. It'd be twisting the whole time, or doing something else wonky.) Luckily, the cotton I bought was on grain. I tore it as soon as I got home to make sure. But it was definitely a Wtf! sort of moment. The cotton will become petticoats... eventually.
