Movies

I saw Sweeney Todd this past Friday. I definitely enjoyed it. It was fun to watch and the music was decent. The costumes were nice as well. My favourite scene is when Todd and Mrs. Lovett are singing about the different flavours of people in the pies. Fop! Ha! While I wouldn't give this movie a 5 out of 5 or anything, it gets a solid 3.5 and it makes me want to see the actual musical on stage. It also makes me want a Sweeney Todd type costume for Hallowe'en, but that's still a couple months away, so no decisions yet.

I also saw the new ITV version of Persuasion last night. Masterpiece (no longer Masterpiece Theatre, which made me a little sad) is showing Austen movies from now until into April! How awesome is that! :) Persuasion wasn't bad, although I definitely prefer the 1995 version. It wasn't as funny as I find both the book and the 1995 version, and the comedy is something that I really enjoy about Jane Austen. A few of the scenes really irritated me, like Anne running out into the hallway in her underwear, or Anne running around all of Bath (especially since Anne really isn't one for physical activity, I mean in the book she gets tired walking to Winthrop!), Capt. Wentworth's rather creepy and perpetual staring, and Mary just annoyed me in general as she had a weird insect-y way of moving and all her talking was really breathy which was not pleasant to listen to. Some of the costumes were nice in the upper classes, but not Anne's. Poor girl got stuck with all the dowdy grey looking dresses. And it sort of bothered me how awkward some of the cast looked in period clothes and Anne's dresses kept clinging around her legs. I think she needed a better petticoat. And was it just me or did her spencer at the end (she wore spencers pretty much throughout the whole movie) EXTREMELY similar to the spencer that Anne wears at the end of the 1995 version? I thought that was neat. Overall, I'd probably give this one a 3.

I really was completely unimpressed with the new Persuasion. I am such a fan of the book and the 95 movie that this version just seemed flat and rushed.

Understandable. It really couldn't hold a candle to the 1995 movie.
