Winter!
Well, I'm pretty sure I did well on my exam yesterday. I remembered almost everything, so that was good. My next exam isn't until Tuesday, and that one shouldn't be too hard either. It's my last two that are going to be difficult. Especially the accounting one. Yuck! People are scared just thinking about it, because it is going to probably have its way with everyone. In a not good way. Anyways...
Saw the Golden Compass yesterday. It was alright. Obviously, not as good as the books. However, Nicole Kidman, whoever played Lee Scoresby, and Dakota Blue Richards were all fantastic. Pretty much exactly how I pictured them in the book, especially when they said lines straight out of the book. There were a few problems I had with the movie. Now, I know that you can't make a movie EXACTLY like the book, but I thought they left out some major stuff that needed to be in there. They really didn't get across some points like how important daemons are in that world and all the stuff pertaining to them, and they played down the degree of horror and complete awfulness of "The Station". Plus, the re-arrangement of events didn't add anything, and really just took away from the story, making it rather disjointed. I mean, seriously, what is the point of changing the order of events when both of them were going to be in the movie anyways. Dumb. They also managed to make the character of Iorek Byrnison pretty darn pathetic, which I really didn't think you could do to an enormous armored bear, but somehow they managed it. Daniel Craig was not the Lord Asriel I thought he was going to be which was disappointing. He needed more presence. He didn't seem to command the screen the way he should. Everything else was pretty minor though. The only little things that bothered me were these: The bears didn't have opposable thumbs like they should. And the way everybody, but especially Lyra were dressed in the North. Seriously, they would all be frost-bitten and having to amputate appendages with the clothes they were wearing. I put on warmer clothes to go to school in, just because we have to walk through the parking lot. And that's here, near the border to the States. And She's Supposed To Be In Iceland! (Yes, capitals are justified, because she was wearing tights. Not even real pants, tights. Out in the freezing cold. With her face all exposed, with a little knitted hood. With a jacket that's not even completely done up. Pretty much in the Arctic. Absolutely ridiculous.) The fight scenes were good. Overall it was fairly entertaining, even though I got bored towards the end. Enough of that though. Just go read the book instead. :)
Speaking of cold. Our furnace was broken for about half of today. That was interesting and a little chilly. I didn't mind much, but everybody else in my house was freezing. (It is currently -14 degrees C, -22 degrees with the windchill, OR 6 degrees F, -8 degrees F with the windchill. So pretty cold out.) Luckily, it sort of fixed itself (something to do with condensation freezing in the pipes) and now our heat is back. Plus my dad built a fire in our fireplace. And I was using the stove to cook. So the house is pretty toasty now. I should probably go study now though. I've procrastinated enough.
