Or at least cutting. I got the velveteen cut out yesterday (aside from the collar and tabs). Hoping to the get thing assembled today and then spend some time over the weekend whipstitching seam allowances. As for the cloud, it's just under 6" now. Looks like 2 repeats = 1 inch. I am a bit worried that I didn't buy enough yarn though. A question for those who are real knitters, will I get any sort of extra length after blocking? (It's knitted with a lacy pattern, every 6th row is a YO, K2tog, and it's 100% Shetland wool.)

Anything wool (and particularly anything lace) should be able to block pretty hard. So yes, it will probably open up and get much wider/longer.

If I am am planning to do a hard block I usually note the before and after measurements on my Ravelry page.

Lacy patterns definitely block bigger. You can get an idea of how much it bigger it will get by stretching it (no need to wet it) so that the holes open up and pinning it out. Lacy things also have a tendency to look screwy and blah until you block them, and they become wonderful. As I recall, these Canadian clouds are really long so you might want to knit up a couple of feet and then block that to get an idea of how much more you need to knit (measuring before and after, of course).

My 1892 petticoat, which isn't even really lacy, blocked so much bigger than my unblocked swatch, that I ended up with 9 of 22 balls of yarn left over!

What they said, it can open up a lot with blocking. Play around with hand stretching it after you have knit one ball, and you will be able to better estimate.
