I'm a weirdo
Feb. 4th, 2016 08:43 pmI actually like doing handsewn buttonholes! (But for some reason I don't like doing eyelets.) I got all 5 buttonholes done on my corset cover this past week. The corset cover is now on hold, to be finished when I'm back home. There's going to be a sewing day with my living history group when I'm there, so I'm going to take that along to sew on the buttons and whipstitch the darts to finish them. The darts turned out huge so there is a lot of excess fabric on the inside. I'm going to cut off a bunch of it and whip the cut edge. I'm hoping to cut out my skirt and skirt lining and maybe get the seams and darts sewn this weekend. Using this pattern for the skirt from Dressmaking Research from an original Harper's Bazar from 1897.

Date: 2016-02-07 02:36 am (UTC)Seriously though it's just finicky. One of those things where the more perfectionist you are, the better the outcome. But having said that, if it's not sewn perfectly matched, like out by 1mm, stand back and see if it looks bad enough to resew.
Oh, my hint is pin LOTS!

Date: 2016-02-07 02:45 am (UTC)I have a dress pattern I could pattern match (I was using 1cm gingham) for only about a foot down the sides, then the seams were on too different an angle to be able to match beyond that. The seaming was similar to this skirt actually. But it's the difference in angle between the two seams that dictated how much matching. Hopefully this one will be better!
Anyway I just had to make judicious decisions, about where I wanted the matching to happen so I did it along the top part of the sides. If anyone was looking at the bottom bit, too bad coz it just couldn't match.
I got heaps of compliments on that dress so I figure it was ok in the end :-P
