Happy New Year!!!
Jan. 2nd, 2008 02:26 pmI hope that everybody had a great New Year's. I went to a house party and stayed up very late. It was a good time. Although, my weird headache/sore throat sickness has turned into a normal, irritating cold. So I'm all stuffed up, but it's better than being ache-y all the time.
I watched Persuasion last night, the 1995? version. I got it from the library. Unfortunately, the DVD itself seemed flawed as the lighting/colour would go red or dark at times before returning to normal. The movie, though, was fantastic! I really think that this is the first time ever where I've read the book first and the movie actually didn't disappoint at all. Everything was so well done. Not to mention the costumes! I thought the change in Elizabeth Elliot's behaviour from what it is in the book wasn't that great at first, but it grew on me, and it was very amusing. Mary Musgrove was done to perfection in my opinion. EXACTLY how I pictured her. And the only significant change, Mr. Elliot's motives in wanting to marry Anne, is an understandable change and didn't take away from the movie at all. Actually, I always thought that his change of heart and attitudes in the book was kind of odd.
As for the costumes, they were just wonderful. Now I want spencers galore. And the headwear was great! The over-the-top hats of Elizabeth and Lady Russell's turbans were just right. And all the accessories! The whitework chemisettes and shawls, the embroidered net caps, all the jewelry. It just all came together so perfectly! It was kind of funny though, I felt bad for them having to walk around in the wind and outside with those huge shawls that looked so cumbersome. And it made me smile to see Anne later in the movie getting her "bloom" back and slowly becoming prettier. Everything just looked so absolutely RIGHT and was done RIGHT. That's the best word I can find to describe it.
