Having a good set of measurements really helped. These were taken by someone else when I was in a class at Costume College. And having my mom around to pin the shoulders was also invaluable. I think fitting gets really annoying when you have to do it entirely by yourself because you keep having to take the mock-up off and make some little change then put it back on, etc.
